AKSA was formed in 2000 with its main role for members being to source and provide third party public liability insurance. Along with doing this, AKSA also creasted the peak-level competition known as the Australian National Kitesurfing Championships.

Very quickly AKSA became involved in access protection, liaising with goverment, waterways and local authorities to ensure that kitesurfing was respected as a legitimate sport and that restricting access was taken seriously.

As the association developed and memberships grew across the country to over 800 in 2004, AKSA developed a network of affiliated state and local associations so the roles of promotion, safety, access protection, competitions and general awareness could be dealt with on a state and local level.

Both AKSA's and its affiliated associations websites have become leading portals for news and information for the sport and they continue to evolve positively. As the presentation of the sport to the media, government bodies and the public is largely carried out through events, competition and promotion development is an ever increasing role for AKSA.

AKSA is now the peak organistion for kitesurfing within Australia and will continue to develop the sport as it grows. The future of AKSA is bright with exciting opportunities arising for further promotion and professional development for both the association and its members. In 2005-2006 we reached a milestone with well over 1000 members.
